Worked example: a two-layer gravel driveway

Calculate separate aggregate layers for a 60-by-12-foot driveway and convert the order to tons.

This is a hypothetical measurement example, not a completed customer project or a construction specification.

The measured plan17.97 cubic yards across 2 layers; about 26.18 short tons.

How the estimate is built

  1. The measured area is 720 sq ft. A 3-inch upper layer and a 4-inch lower layer are calculated separately.
  2. Each layer has its own finished cubic yards, loose order volume, and supplier density.
  3. The displayed combined load count is only a capacity check; separate materials may require separate deliveries.

Before buying

Confirm the layer design, density for each aggregate, truck capacity, and whether the supplier sells by cubic yard or short ton.
