Project guide

Lawns & sod

Estimate lawn area, sod rolls, pallets, and optional topsoil.

Roll dimensions and pallet counts vary. Enter the product offered by your supplier, then plan delivery close to installation.

What does this project take?

Subtract beds and hardscape from the lawn footprint, then divide the installable area plus your cutting allowance by the coverage of the exact sod roll or slab. Round rolls and pallets according to what the supplier will sell.

What to have before you calculate

  • An installable lawn sketch with excluded beds and structures
  • Square feet per roll or slab and rolls per pallet from the sod farm
  • A realistic delivery and installation window for the prepared site

Before you place the order

Confirm grass variety for your location, roll or slab coverage, partial-pallet availability, harvest and delivery timing, and installation instructions with the supplier or local extension office.

Your route through the project

  1. Measure the lawn and subtract beds or structures.
  2. Use the supplier’s roll coverage and a cutting allowance.
  3. Arrange delivery, preparation, and installation timing.

1. Measure the actual work

Sketch the installable turf sections and subtract garden beds, hardscape, and buildings. Sloped or irregular ground may need closer measurement than a property map suggests. Record widths near tight edges where cutting loss will occur.

2. Choose the materials

Use the area covered by the supplier’s actual roll or slab and its rolls per pallet. A rounded full-pallet equivalent does not mean you must buy only pallets; the planner shows a full-pallet-plus-loose-roll option. If comparing seed, use the rate printed for the chosen seed product.

3. Prepare the order

Prepare the site and delivery access before arranging perishable sod. Ask the supplier when the material is cut, how quickly it should be installed, whether partial pallets are available, and which grass is appropriate locally.

What can change the estimate?

The tool calculates material quantities, not a universal planting calendar. Establishment and watering guidance differ by grass type, season, and region; use local extension guidance and product instructions.

Use the project planner

Measure lawn area and estimate sod rolls, pallet equivalents, optional topsoil, and material cost. It shows the input assumptions and produces a shopping list you can review with a supplier.
