Bags or bulk delivery: how to compare them

Compare total purchase quantities rather than package prices alone.

2 cu yd needs 27 whole 2-cu-ft bags: $135 at $5 each. Bulk at $45/cu yd plus $60 delivery is $150. Replace prices and minimums with real quotes.

Convert to the same unit

A cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. If a bag contains 2 cubic feet, divide the required cubic feet by two and round up to whole bags. A bulk quote needs the same required cubic yards as its starting point.

Include the full purchase

Enter the bag price, bulk price per cubic yard, delivery charge, minimum order, and any pickup costs. A cheaper price per unit may cost more after delivery. You may also value the convenience of bags for a small or hard-to-access bed.

Use the project result

The mulch and soil planner shows both bag count and bulk volume from the same measured area. Check the printed volume on the actual bag; similar-looking packages can contain different amounts.

Hypothetical worked measurement

Two cubic yards equal 54 cubic feet. At 2 cubic feet per bag, 27 whole bags match that volume. If bags cost $5 each, the bag subtotal is $135. A bulk quote of $45 per yard plus $60 delivery totals $150 before any minimum-order terms.

Check before you order

Use the same required volume on both sides of the comparison and include delivery or pickup costs.

Apply the result to your project

  • Compare the same material and required cubic feet before considering package prices.
  • Round bags to whole packages; ask the bulk supplier about minimums and order increments.
  • Add delivery or pickup costs and check whether the drop location is usable for the project.
