Short answer: Measure only the ground that will receive grass. Add disjoint lawn sections and remove beds, paving, and structures before applying a sod cutting allowance.

Walk the boundary
Sketch each lawn section and measure its main dimensions. Treat a narrow side yard and a wide rear lawn as separate areas. Exclude planting beds, patios, play surfaces, and buildings.
Use the supplier’s product size
Calculate total square footage, then enter the actual square feet covered by one roll or slab. Sod products and pallet contents vary by supplier, so a generic roll size may produce the wrong order.
Include cutting allowance
Edges, curves, and obstacles usually create offcuts. Set an allowance you can explain, calculate rolls, and round up to whole pieces. The sod planner will then show both rolls and the equivalent full-pallet count.
Hypothetical worked example
A 50 × 20 ft lawn rectangle is 1,000 sq ft. If a 10 × 10 ft planting bed will remain, the installable sod area is 900 sq ft. Add a cutting allowance only after subtracting that bed.
Which situation matches your project?
Limit to check: A property map or outer rectangle can overstate the installable area when it includes beds and hardscape.
