Practical guide

Plan sod delivery and installation around the measured lawn

Turn rolls and pallets into a site-ready delivery plan.

Short answer: Finish the lawn measurement and rounded roll count before booking delivery, then confirm pallet terms, fresh-cut timing, preparation, labor, and initial watering with the supplier.

900 sq ft plus 5% cuts = 945 sq ft. At 10 sq ft per roll, order 95 rolls. With 70 rolls per pallet, that is 1 full pallet plus 25 loose rolls if sold; whole pallets only means 2 pallets and 45 surplus rolls. Confirm fresh-cut delivery and readiness with the supplier.

Finish the area and product takeoff

Measure only installable lawn, then apply an explicit cutting allowance. Divide adjusted area by the supplier roll or slab coverage and round up to whole pieces. Divide the resulting roll count by rolls per pallet only after asking whether individual rolls can accompany full pallets. The adjustable example compares those two purchase choices.

Prepare before delivery

Confirm grading, soil preparation, access, water availability, and a place to stage pallets with the installer or supplier. Request the product’s cut time and delivery window. University of Minnesota Extension advises fresh sod cut no more than 24 hours before delivery where possible and laid as soon as possible, or within a day; follow local supplier and regional guidance for the product and weather.

Sequence the day and aftercare

Arrange labor and equipment so delivery, laying, and initial watering fit the supplier’s instructions. Keep roll count, pallet terms, delivery fee, and any topsoil as separate order lines. Use the sod planner for quantities and the project list to record supplier commitments and dates.

Hypothetical worked example

A measured 900 sq ft lawn with 5% cutting allowance needs 945 sq ft of sod. At 10 sq ft per roll, that is 95 rolls. If the supplier packs 70 rolls per pallet and sells loose rolls, one pallet plus 25 rolls covers the order. If it sells whole pallets only, two pallets deliver 140 rolls and 45 rolls of surplus. Confirm delivery and installation timing before ordering.

Limit to check: The example uses hypothetical roll and pallet sizes. Freshness, installation, and watering should follow the local sod farm and regional extension guidance.
