Paver Pattern & Cut Planner
Count full and edge-cut paver positions for a rectangular stack or running-bond layout, then round the purchase to packs.
Set your project details
Test the paver dimensions and bond you plan to use. Edge pieces are counted separately, because a tight layout can need many cuts even when the square footage is unchanged.

The calculation
Worked example (U.S. customary)
A 16 × 12 ft rectangle with 8 × 4 in pavers and no joint has 864 area-equivalent pieces. A running bond has 882 visible positions when each edge cut is counted separately; some offcuts may be reused.
Measure the boundary before choosing a bond
Use the finished paved dimensions, not the excavation edge. A rectangular layout is counted course by course. If the patio turns a corner or wraps around an obstacle, split it into rectangles and check that the rectangles do not cover the same ground. The full patio planner handles the combined area and the separate base and bedding quantities.
Read the cut count as a decision signal
A running bond shifts alternate courses by half a paver. That creates partial positions at some edges even when the same square footage is covered. The tool counts a separate piece for each visible edge position, then adds only the breakage allowance you entered. Offcuts can sometimes serve another edge, so this is a conservative purchasing view rather than a cutting plan.
Before placing the order
Check the manufacturer’s face dimensions, spacer or joint requirements, available pack size, and whether the chosen bond is appropriate for the selected product. Mark borders, curves, steps, and inlays on a sketch; they can change the cut pattern beyond this rectangular preview.
What to check before buying
The edge count is a layout estimate. Offcuts may be reusable and manufacturer patterns may require different pieces. Confirm product dimensions and cut strategy before ordering.
Common questions
Why is the running-bond count higher than area divided by paver size?
Area division treats partial edge pieces as reusable fractions. This tool counts every visible cut position as a piece before any reuse.
Can this replace a manufacturer pattern sheet?
No. Mixed-size kits, borders, and manufacturer-specific bonds need their own layout instructions.
