Sod vs Seed Cost & Quantity Comparison

Compare a measured lawn as sod rolls and seed bags using real package coverage, rates, waste, and delivery prices.

Set your project details

Use the same measured lawn area for both options. The tool rounds sod to whole rolls and seed to whole bags, then shows the material cost you entered for each route.

Switching units converts the current entries.

The calculation

Sod rolls = ceiling(area × (1 + cutting allowance) ÷ roll coverage). Seed pounds = area ÷ 1,000 × product rate; seed bags = ceiling(seed pounds ÷ bag weight). Compare rounded purchase costs plus entered delivery.

Worked example (U.S. customary)

At 1,000 sq ft, 10 sq ft per sod roll and 5% cut allowance give 105 rolls. At an example 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft seed rate, a 10 lb bag covers the calculated seed amount.

Use one measured lawn area

Exclude the same beds, pavement, and structures for both methods. Sod receives an editable allowance for cuts. Seed uses the application rate printed for the selected product; this tool does not recommend a rate for a grass species.

Compare packages rather than raw material

A fractional sod roll cannot usually be bought, and seed is sold in whole bag sizes. The comparison rounds both routes to purchase units and adds the delivery amounts you entered. Labor, watering, soil preparation, and future care are not included in these material totals.

Choose with the site in mind

Immediate cover, erosion exposure, season, local grass suitability, and the time available for establishment may matter more than the package price difference. Use regional extension guidance and the product label when planning the installation window and care.

What to check before buying

This compares entered material and delivery costs. Soil preparation, watering, installation labor, establishment time, season, and erosion exposure also affect the choice.

Common questions

Does a cheaper seed total mean seed is the better choice?

No. The total covers entered seed packages and delivery, not all establishment costs or site needs.

What if a supplier sells sod by the pallet only?

Use the full sod planner to check pallet and loose-roll options, then confirm its actual sales terms.
